Mary Magdalene

A Woman Rewritten By History

This thesis is about Mary Magdalene, the figure the church rebranded a prostitute to belittle the important role she played as an apostle of Jesus Christ and a teacher of Christianity. This lie stemmed from the church’s misogyny and desire for positions of power to belong solely to men.

The first piece, The Apostle of the Apostles, depicts a scene from Easter morning. Jesus, upon rising from the dead, first appeared to his disciple Mary Magdalene and trusted her to spread the word of his resurrection to the other disciples.

The second piece, The Miracle of the Red Egg, depicts Mary Magdalene telling the story of Jesus’s resurrection with a Roman Emperor. Upon hearing her story the emperor proclaimed, “that is as likely as the egg you are holding turning red.” the egg promptly turned red.

The third and final piece in this series, The Ascension of Mary Magdalene, depicts Mary Magdalene at the end of her life being lifted to heaven by Angels. She lived a full life preaching Christianity across the Middle East and Europe.
